Teaching Abroad: A Journey of Growth, Connection, and Discovery

When I first decided to teach abroad, I had no idea how transformative the experience would be. What began as a leap of faith turned into the adventure of a lifetime. From moments spent exploring unfamiliar roads to shared laughs with students and colleagues, every day in Thailand told a new story.

Teaching English in Phrae became more than just a job; it was an opportunity to immerse myself in a culture, forge lasting connections, and uncover new parts of myself. Through both challenges and triumphs, I found a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment in the relationships I built and the experiences I gained.

From “My Students” to “My Kids”

Teaching English to children in Phrae was my first experience as an ESL teacher. Initially, I was nervous—unsure if I could make an impact in a classroom setting. Yet, those feelings quickly transformed into excitement and pride as I witnessed my students blossom. Over time, they stopped being just “my students” and became “my kids.” Seeing their eyes light up when they grasped a new concept or confidently spoke in English was a joy that words can barely capture.

One of my most rewarding moments came during a vocabulary activity when a typically shy student hesitantly raised their hand and confidently answered a question in front of the entire class. The pride on their face was unforgettable. Another highlight was during an individual portfolio project, where students used words and art to express who they are, what they enjoy, their goals, and their dreams for the future. Not only did they practice English, but I also gained valuable insights into their personalities—from one child’s love of drawing to another’s passion for football.

These moments made the classroom come alive. They taught me that teaching isn’t just about lessons and worksheets—it’s about building confidence, nurturing curiosity, and celebrating small victories. In many ways, my students taught me as much as I taught them.

Life in Phrae: Finding Home in the Unfamiliar

Phrae became more than just a temporary destination; it felt like home. Its quiet charm and close-knit community were the perfect backdrop to my teaching journey. I grew to love the slow rhythm of life, from walking along its peaceful streets to finding hidden gems like local cafés and markets.

One of my favorite memories was exploring the night market with my colleagues. The vibrant stalls, filled with the aroma of grilled meat and fresh fruits, were a feast for the senses. I learned to bargain in Thai, tried dishes I’d never heard of before, and even bonded with vendors who recognized me after my first few visits.

A once-random meet-up spot with friends quickly became my favorite hangout. It was a small café with cozy seating, where we shared laughs, swapped teaching stories, and made memories that now feel unbreakable. Unfamiliar roads turned into favorite routes that I’ll always remember, leading me to new adventures and deeper connections.

But life in Phrae wasn’t just about teaching—it was about immersing myself in a culture vastly different from my own. The town’s rich history and warm, welcoming people made me feel like I belonged. From savoring the local delicacies to learning basic Thai phrases and even training in Muay Thai, I gained a deeper appreciation for the country and its traditions.

Beyond the Classroom: Experiences That Shaped Me

While teaching in Phrae was the heart of my journey, I also took the opportunity to explore Thailand’s incredible diversity. One of the highlights was visiting an elephant sanctuary, where I had the chance to learn about ethical animal tourism and care for these majestic creatures. Feeding them, walking alongside them, and observing their natural behaviors was a humbling experience that deepened my respect for wildlife conservation.

I also braved the country’s longest zipline, soaring over lush forests and breathtaking landscapes. The rush of adrenaline was matched only by the awe-inspiring views around me. Another memorable moment was standing atop Thailand’s tallest building, gazing at the sprawling city below—a stark contrast to the serene mountains of the North.

These adventures were unforgettable, but they served as a backdrop to the most meaningful part of my journey: the time spent in Phrae with my students, colleagues, and newfound friends.

Embracing the Diversity of Thailand

During my five months abroad, I was fortunate enough to explore three distinct regions of Thailand, each offering its own unique charm.

The southern beaches were a dream—calm and relaxing, with pristine waters and soft sands that seemed to stretch endlessly. I remember walking along the shore at sunrise, the sky painted in hues of pink and orange, and feeling a sense of peace I’d never known before.

The central city was alive with energy, buzzing with activity and the hum of urban life. I explored grand temples, navigated busy markets, and marveled at the juxtaposition of ancient architecture and modern skyscrapers.

But it was the northern mountains that truly took my breath away. The stunning landscapes made Phrae a beautiful place to call home, and every sunset felt like a gift. Hiking through lush trails and discovering hidden waterfalls made me fall in love with nature all over again.

Experiencing this diversity gave me a deeper understanding of Thailand’s culture and people. Each region brought something special to my journey, but Phrae holds a place in my heart that no other destination can replace.

Lessons Beyond the Classroom

Teaching English in Thailand wasn’t just a job—it was an opportunity to grow as a person. I learned how to navigate cultural differences, embrace challenges, and celebrate small victories. From planning lessons to fostering meaningful connections with my students, I discovered the profound importance of education as a tool for empowerment.

One of the most surprising lessons came from my students themselves. They reminded me of the power of resilience and curiosity. Watching them overcome language barriers and fear of mistakes inspired me to do the same.

Saying Goodbye: A Roller Coaster of Emotions

As my time in Phrae came to an end, I found myself overwhelmed with emotion. The final month was filled with cherished moments and heartfelt goodbyes. Leaving the town, my students, and the connections I had built was incredibly difficult.

On one of my last days, a group of students surprised me with handwritten notes and drawings. Their words of gratitude and well-wishes brought tears to my eyes, with many notes saying, “I love you,” “Goodbye,” and “I’ll miss you, teacher.” These heartfelt messages left a lasting impact on me, and in that moment, I truly understood the significance of my time there—not only on their lives but on mine as well. I realized how deeply these connections had shaped me.

A Memory to Hold Forever

What began as an incredible experience has now become a beautiful memory that I’ll hold close forever. I’m counting down the days until I can return to Phrae as “Teacher Ali” and continue building on the unforgettable moments we shared.

Thailand, you’ve been a blast. Until we meet again.
