Industry Acronyms
The commonly used industry acronyms TESOL, TESL, TEFL, EFL, and ESL can be confusing, especially since they are often used interchangeably. The acronyms stand for:
- TESOL – Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
- TESL – Teaching English as a Second Language
- TEFL – Teaching English as a Foreign Language
- EFL – English as a Foreign Language
- ESL – English as a Second Language
The main difference between these acronyms is the part of the world in which the term is used (i.e., in Europe, English is commonly referred to as a foreign language whereas in the US and Canada, English is commonly referred to as a second language). At the end of our course, graduates receive a combined TESOL/TESL/TEFL certificate which is recognized and accepted around the world, and which includes all components of TESOL, TESL, and TEFL teacher training.
